About

In December 1914, Liverpool became one of the 21 Auxiliary Patrol Bases and in February 1915, the base of the 10th Cruiser Squadron. During the Second World War, Liverpool was headquarters of Western Approaches Command and a manning depot for officers and men of the Merchant Navy who agreed to serve with the Royal Navy for the duration of the war. Liverpool (Anfield) Cemetery contains burials of both wars. The majority are in two war graves plots in Section 5, with Screen Walls bearing the names of those buried there. The rest of the war burials are scattered throughout the cemetery.

4 images The entrance to the vast Liverpool ( Anfield ) Cemetery is located on Priory Road off Walton Lane, which passes close to Everton's Goodison Park Football Ground. The CWG plots are identified by the white Portland stone memorial screen walls and cross between Plot 5 ( CE ) and Plot 5 ( RC ).Many of the older headstones in these 2 plots have fallen over and are damaged as the foundations and soil are in poor condition. I was unable to find the individual plot ( Grave 56 ) for Frederick William Thornton of RNVR. The Commonwealth War Graves site is well maintained. It is interesting to note that the 1918 flu epidemic which killed Gunner Thornton was believed to have killed as many as 250,000 people in Britain. One corner of the cemetery is allocated to people/families of Chinese descent and their headstones are all inscribed in Chinese script. There must have been many oriental seamen who came into Liverpool and decided to stay.

Rutland and The Battle of the Somme

More than 90 Rutland soldiers died in the Battle of the Somme which lasted from 1 July 1916 until the middle of November. Today they lie in cemeteries across the old battlefield in northern France or are remembered among the 72,000 names on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme. By using our interactive map, you can find out what happened to them.
