About

This lovely church no longer holds regular services but is usually open to visitors. The entrance to the churchyard from the road is a memorial to the six soldiers from Wakerley who died during the First World War. There is also an unusual memorial inside the church. As well as the names of the six dead, it also names all those who were wounded and even those who served and came home safely. Among the six dead is William Pickering who was born in Glaston and went to school in Barrowden. Two of the others are buried in the churchyard, Harry Shelton and Ephriam Aldis. Ephriam's headstone records he died from wounds sustained in the Battle of the Somme.

Rutland and The Battle of the Somme

More than 90 Rutland soldiers died in the Battle of the Somme which lasted from 1 July 1916 until the middle of November. Today they lie in cemeteries across the old battlefield in northern France or are remembered among the 72,000 names on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme. By using our interactive map, you can find out what happened to them.
