4 images Leave the Motorway M4 at Junction 16, adjacent to Swindon, and follow the signs to Royal Wootton Bassett : the A3102 leads straight into the High Street. The Church of St. Bartholomews and All Saints is on the right hand side, just beyond the half-timbered 17th Century Town Hall, which stands on columns.Inside the Church there is a brass memorial wall plaque listing the 46 names of the men who perished in the Great War, including B.BROWN ( Private Brian Brown of Royal Marine Light Infantry ), A.Brown (Alan) and H.Brown (Hedley), his brothers. The plaque also states that a Screen was erected in the Church to the Glory of God and in Honoured Memory of those men who made the Supreme Sacrifice. There is also a Memorial Hall and Memorial Garden in Royal Wootton Bassett, but I did not look for these.

Rutland and The Battle of the Somme

More than 90 Rutland soldiers died in the Battle of the Somme which lasted from 1 July 1916 until the middle of November. Today they lie in cemeteries across the old battlefield in northern France or are remembered among the 72,000 names on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme. By using our interactive map, you can find out what happened to them.
