About

Barrowden has an unusual wooden war memorial inside St Peter's Church with the names of 14 men who died. They include three Curtis brothers and the youngest of our soldiers to die, William Clifton. There is also a plaque inside to the memory of Harry Hopkins which was originally on the wall of the old Baptist Chapel, now a private house. In the churchyard, George Pollard is also remembered on his parent's memorial although the lettering is quite hard to make out.

Do you know something about Barrowden War Memorial (St Peter's Church) that hasn't been mentioned?

Rutland and The Battle of the Somme

More than 90 Rutland soldiers died in the Battle of the Somme which lasted from 1 July 1916 until the middle of November. Today they lie in cemeteries across the old battlefield in northern France or are remembered among the 72,000 names on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme. By using our interactive map, you can find out what happened to them.
