BREWSTER Frederick

Known information

Frederick Brewster was born in Uppingham at the start of 1884, the son of Thomas and Ann Brewster.  According to his enlistement records, he was living at home at South View in Uppingham and working as a bricklayer before the Great War.  He enlisted in the town in December 1915, and joined the army for training at the end of March 1916.  He went over to France in August 1916 at the height of the Battle of the Somme and fought with the 1st Battalion Leicestershire Regiment. He died on the second day of the German Spring Offensive in March 1918, along with 8 fellow Leicestershire Regiment soldiers from Rutland. He is remembered on Bay 5 of the Arras Memorial in France, and on Uppingham's war memorial.  After the war his parents were registered as living in Brighton.

More than 90 Rutland soldiers died in the Battle of the Somme which lasted from 1 July 1916 until the middle of November. Today they lie in cemeteries across the old battlefield in northern France or are remembered among the 72,000 names on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme.
