ROUSE George Alfred

Known information

Private George Alfred Rouse joined up as a sailor but fought as a soldier. He was born at Market Overton on 21 July 1888 the son of Robert and Frances Rouse. His father died while he was just a child and he grew up with his mother and three sisters. He was a baker before joining the Royal Naval Division on 21 August 1917, serving in the Howe Battalion. George arrived in France on 1 January 1918, and was killed in action on 5 April. He is buried in Englebelmer Communal Cemetery Extension, grave B.19, and is remembered on Market Overton's war memorial.

Rutland and The Battle of the Somme

More than 90 Rutland soldiers died in the Battle of the Somme which lasted from 1 July 1916 until the middle of November. Today they lie in cemeteries across the old battlefield in northern France or are remembered among the 72,000 names on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme.
