We have biographies for two William Needhams, both of whom, according to George Phillips and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, came from Oakham. One is plain William, who appears to have emigrated to Canada as a young man and joined up there. Except his wife Helen appeared to be back in Oakham after the war. The other is William Frederick whose parents were still in Oakham after the war although his wife Annie was living in Leicester. That all makes sense until you look at war memorials. The one in Oakham has three Needhams, but only one W Needham. On the war memorial in Langham churchyard, which remembers the dead of both Langham and nearby Barleythorpe, there is also a William Needham. So who’s who and which is which?
