What we like to do at Rutland Remembers is to draw attention to particular soldiers or to days when several of our soldiers died. We do this by Twitter and Facebook. Today is such a day. Eight Rutland soldiers died on the first day of the Battle of the Somme in 1916, 98 years ago today. Many more will die over the coming days. Battlefield tourism is big business these days and no doubt several people today will have walked unknowingly past the graves of Rutland men. We have more than a hundred either buried or remembered in the Somme area. Next week we will be visiting too and will lay a cross on as many graves as we can as well as lay a wreath at the magnificent Thiepval Memorial.
